Abstract

Secondary metabolites are a class of organic compounds of plant origin of great economic importance, being increasingly used in the industrial sector as a source of new products. Among these bioactive compounds of plant origin, stand out the alkaloids used in the treatment of several diseases, including cancer. The aim of this study was to conduct a technological forecasting about alkaloids used to treat cancer; analyzing the country's participation in the patents application on innovation and national banks and international technology in recent years. For this, a technological prospection was carried out in the databases of the USPTO, EPO, WIPO, LATIPAT and INPI selecting patents that had the term alkaloid and cancer in the title and/or abstract. The results showed that the China is the main depositary country and the highest number of patents has been deposited in the last 10 years. There was an increase in patent applications since 2002 and the most abundant international classification (CIP) in this forecasting was A61K, which deals with preparations for medical, dental or hygienic purposes. Brazil does not appear as a depository despite being a country with great biological potential.
