Abstract

This work aimed to report the case of a patient who was presented at the Veterinary Clinic of the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil), in November 2023, with a history of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disease characterized by the occurrence of convulsive crises, and which has been frequently found in the veterinary routine. Neurological disorders are complex to identify and treat, and epilepsy is an example of this. The difficulty begins with the diagnosis, where the identification, or lack thereof, of convulsive crises can depend greatly on the guardian's perception and report.  Furthermore, the list of differential diagnoses is extensive and the elimination process and search for a cause can take time. Regarding treatment, there are few drugs with proven efficacy nowadays, with phenobarbital and potassium bromide being most relevant in the treatment of epilepsy. Even with the institution of drug therapy, there are several factors that interfere with the assertiveness of the treatment, from the guardian's compliance in the administration or carrying out of monitoring exams, to the receptivity and response of each organism to medications and dosage. Success in therapy can be achieved when the patient presents a decrease in the frequency, duration and intensity of episodes, as complete interruption is not commonly seen.
