Abstract

Objective. To determine the effect of a psychoeducational program with a cultural focus, in reducing the depressive symptoms of main family caregivers of dependent elderly people. Methodology. Quantitative-qualitative quasi-experimental study of focus groups and participant observation, with pre-test and post-test applying the Depression Scale. 6 caregivers residing in Bogotá participated. Self-recognition activities, self-assessment, strengthening the family and social network were carried out. Shapiro-Wilk and Wilcoxon statistical tests were used. The qualitative analysis was triangulated, identifying emerging categories and subcategories allowing saturation of the data. The criteria of credibility, confirmability and transferability were taken into account, assuming the ethical criteria of Resolution 8430 of 1993 and the declaration of Helsinki. Results. A significant effect was obtained with the Wilcoxon test (Z = -2,207 p <0.027), the categories described a positive improvement in the identification of capacities and strengths, recognition of support networks and family assessment. Conclusions: Psychoeducation with a cultural focus is effective, since it adapts its actions according to the worldview and language known by the groups, impacting on resilience and significant learning.
