The Phoenician’s sanctuary of the Cerro de la Tortuga (Málaga). An interpretation test

Abstract

The archaeological excavations carried out in the 1960s in the site of Cerro de la Tortuga uncovered a rural peri-urban sanctuary that can be related to the Phoenician city of Malaca. However, the lack of exactitude of these works has caused their analysis to be extremely problematic, which is why it is usually set aside within the studies on the colonial religious sphere in the southern peninsula. For this reason, we believe it is interesting to offer an interpretative essay to deal with the examination of its building structures, documented materials as well as the ritual practices carried out there. At the same time we will try to establish a chronological framework in which to place it.
