On December 16, 2016, the Plenum of the University Council at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) approved a proposal to transform the University Gender Studies Program (Spanish acronym PUEG) into a Center for Gender Research and Studies (Spanish acronym CIEG). The proposal was organized around three fundamental axes: 1) the substantive functions of the university: research, teaching, and the dissemination of culture; 2) the consolidation of gender equality in the UNAM; and 3) social outreach. These axes give the new center characteristic traits which distinguish it from other areas in the university. This article discusses the pertinence of creating the CIEG in view of the importance gender studies have gained, both in academia and in social life.
