Abstract
In this study, it was stressed that the relevant changes of the optical-phonon spectrum in the well can be engineered by including one or more 'foreign' monolayers, particularly when the latter contains atoms either much lighter or much heavier than those of the host lattice. The continuum theory of optical modes in layered structures was applied to describe the optical modes in the presence of a mechanically mismatched monolayer. In the continuum theory, the necessity of satisfying both mechanical and electric boundary conditions was met by a triple hybridization of longitudinal optical, transverse optical, and interface polariton. The most striking outcome for this case was that the structure significantly modified antisymmetric modes, which were the modes accountable for interadjacent-subband scattering.
