Abstract

A model of dominant cell degradation mechanisms is necessary when designing optimal battery controls that maximize battery-pack life while also maximizing performance. This model must be simple and incremental, so that it is practical to implement using an inexpensive microcontroller. For that purpose, this paper proposes a new simpler implementation of reduced-order model equations already in the literature that describe the growth of the solid-electrolyte interphase layer. This implementation requires only algebraic operations versus the iterative trigonometric operations formerly required and yields an additional speedup of more than 10 : 1. © 2013 The Electrochemical Society.
