Abstract
Disorders of the lungs due to occupation are a growing problem. The increasing complexity of modern industry has resulted in a proliferation of substances which, if inhaled, may temporarily or permanently affect the lungs, and which result in disability and diagnostic difficulty. The book approaches the subject primarily from the medical standpoint. It gives comprehensive consideration to the origins and nature of mineral and organic dusts, gases and fumes which may cause disease, and to the various occupational and other conditions in which they may be encountered. The principles which underlie a proper understanding and diagnosis of these disorders are explained, and particular attention is paid to their pathological and radiographic features. Recent concepts of pathogenesis are discussed, including the established or suggested part played by immunological activity in different diseases and the role of pulmonary and systemic reactions to inhaled particles and other aerosols. The book emphasizes that occupational disorders of the lungs are an integral part of thoracic and general medicine, especially in regard to differential diagnosis and treatment.
