Abstract
This study aims to eliminate the inability of reading disability of a student having dyslexia. Dyslexia was thoroughly analyzed as a concept throughout this process. Then, a reading program was performed for this student by starting off methods and technics developed to overcome the reading disability. In this study; activity and data instruments, developed in the scope of individualized reading program that was worked out by Akyol and Yıldız (2010) to enhance reading and writing skills of a student having dyslexia, were used. The study involved the four-week period spanning throughout the year with second-year pupils attending at a primary school in 2014-2015 academic years. Surveys have been applied daily throughout 40-minute sessions in every week day. It was seen that at the end of the program, applied techniques reached their target. The student's reading skill which was on anxiety level has increased the independent level. Moreover, the writing skill which came along with reading skill improved noticeably. Extended Abstract Reading-writing training provided for the first graders attending at a primary school plays a key role in equipping students with qualified reading skills. Students employ such skills throughout their lives. Although the literacy training has been provided in accordance with the goals of education, several difficulties could be observed in teaching and improving reading skills to students. The most distinctive one of those is the inability of reading, namely dyslexia. Purpose and Significance: This study aims to evaluate an individualized program which was, in this context, built up to eliminate the reading disability of a second grade student with the inadequate reading skills. This study is thought to have an example to provide proper and effective practices for teachers who confront with the primary school students who have reading disability.
