Abstract

In the last centuries, traditional thyroid surgery would be expanded by minimally invasive and extracervical approaches to optimize the cosmetic result. In combination with robotic surgical systems, the transaxillary approach to the thyroid gland is actually the most popular. Robotic transaxillary thyroid surgery is suitable for benign, small goiters and can be performed uni- or bilateral. Advantages are the good visualization of small structures like recurrent laryngeal nerve or parathyroid glands, interactive robotic arms equipped with instruments with multiple degrees of motion and a very attractive cosmetic outcome. An extended operation time and higher costs make the most serious disadvantages. Robotic transaxillary thyroid surgery should be performed by experienced endocrine surgeons and is a good alternative for patients with high standards in cosmetic outcome.
