The main objective of this article is the psychological analysis, from a behavioural perspective, of the different self-control strategies involved in the various therapeutical approaches (total abstinence, controlled drinking and damage and risk reduction) in alcohol abuse and dependence. This theoretical and clinical reflection analysis is carried out taking into account recent research into animal and human learning applied to the clinical practice of alcoholism. We suggest the need for greater flexibility with regard to the inclusion of the different alternatives in the treatment, taking into consideration the therapeutical goals of the patient himself/herself. In addition, we assume that controlled drinking and interventions in damage and risk reduction are based on the same principles with regard to the modification of the consumption response parameters and associated behaviours, although they have a different purpose - moderate and controlled consumption in one case, and damage and risk reduction in the other.
