O idadismo como viés cultural: refletindo sobre a produção de sentidos para a velhice em nossos dias

Abstract

Resumo Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão sobre o tema da velhice no enquadramento das mídias audiovisuais, especialmente o cinema. Muitas vezes acionado no inconsciente, o idadismo é o preconceito baseado na idade que ocasiona diferentes formas de discriminação. Essa forma de opressão emerge como problemática das relações entre velhice e subjetividade. A Comunicação diz respeito à vinculação social em um contexto de renhidas disputas em torno da produção de significados. Nessa reflexão sobre a construção sociocultural da velhice como desprezível e sobre o ostracismo dos mais velhos no contemporâneo, apostase na capacidade de resistir aos padrões vigentes e de inventar outros modos de ser, viver e valorizar a vida na maturidade.Abstract This paper aims to reflect upon the topic of ageing from the standpoint of audio-visual media, especially the cinema. Very often triggered unconsciously, ageism is a type of prejudice that renders social discrimination based on a person’s age. This form of oppression takes part in the social debate concerning ageing and the formation of subjectivities. Communication fosters social bonding in a context of fierce struggles around the production of meanings. By reflecting upon the social construction of older age as despicable and older people as social outcasts, we bet on our capacity to resist ongoing trends and invent alternative modes of being, living and cherishing longer life.
