Abstract

As substantial part of sustainable development, water conducts significant contributions in contemporary environmental challenges. However, water scarcity is spreading all over the world. In Indonesia, agricultural sector contributes 70% to the national water consumption, dominated by rice commodities. Organic system has come up as an alternative by its potential in reducing water consumption. Therefore, this research aims to assess water consumption of organic rice commodity. Using the water footprint methodology, the assessment shows the total water footprint of organic rice commodity is 1,145 m3/ton, consists of 88.86% of green water footprint, 9.00% of blue water footprint, and 2.14% of grey water footprint. Organic rice saves up to 52.8% of water footprint compared to the conventional rice.
