Hire who struggles: homeless worker movement, technologies and digital solidarity economy

Abstract

The article aims to analyze organizational elements of the Hire Who Struggles initiative, by the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST), as an experiment in technology and labour in the context of a digital solidarity economy. Based on interviews with workers of the project, the article analyzes: the labour organization and the perspective of the digital solidarity economy; the praxis of the social movement; and the organization of grassroots politics. The MTST is organized based on territorial organization, which precedes the construction of technologies, and based on praxis, articulated the construction of concepts such as popular digital sovereignty. The article argues that Hire Who Struggles has the advantage of the institutional fabric of the social movement to establish itself, which enables a strengthening of the struggle and organization. The workers are not only service providers, but also help to spread the word and the struggles of the homeless workers.
