Abstract

The purpose of this research was to quantify the individual stock of biomass and carbon fixed in Euterpe oleracea Mart., through the analysis of its carbon and dry biomass contents. Eighteen palm trees were analyzed divided in the following compartments: stem, edible part (palm), roots and foliage (bunches and fruits). The material was dried, weighed, crushed and grinded and it had its carbon contents determined. Carbon fraction means were as follows: 49.5% of carbon fixed for bunches and fruits, 45.5% fixed for roots, 42.8% for foliage, 41.2% for stem and 39.6% for the edible part, with weighted average of 43.1%. Statistical differences were observed despite the small variation in the carbon contents. The largest concentration of biomass (50%) and fixed carbon occurred in the stem. The equation Total Weight of Carbon TWC = 2.22017 + 2.29353 + 0.0148155 × Dap × Dap2hf satisfactorily represents the behavior of carbon stocks as a function of dbh; the different levels of carbon for each compartment should be taken into account for carbon quantification.
