Abstract

Distance Education has grown worldwide. This article aims to present an overview of distance learning in Brazil in terms of permanence, school evasion, teaching practices and student profile. Paths covered, trends and challenges for quality improvements are discussed. From the survey of secondary data and literature review, an overview of undergraduate distance learning courses was built, based on a theoretical model of an Integrated and Summative Assessment, based on five components: Inputs, Processes, Procedures, Results and Environment. The analysis points to a rapid expansion of the modality in recent years and an evolution in Brazil. There is also a gap in Brazilian public policies for this modality. A research agenda is discussed that will enable a consistent advance in the area.
