Abstract

This book provides pertinent information about the epidemiology of various infections in the pregnant woman and her neonate, the risk of transmission to the fetus or neonate, the clinical spectrum of the disease, and a recommended approach to the diagnosis of the infection in both the mother and neonate. The book covers a wide range of microorganisms that can cause congenital and perinatal infections, including herpes simplex virus, human cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, varicella-zoster virus, human herpesvirus 6, 7 and 8, rubella virus, Parvovirus B19, enteroviruses, human immunodeficiency virus type 1, hepatitis A, B, C, D and E viruses, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, dengue virus, Treponema pallidum, group B streptococci, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria gonorrhoea, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Toxoplasma gondii, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, Candida, and Plasmodium. An in-depth discussion on the role of placental histopathology in the diagnosis of congenital infection is included.
