Abstract

The leaf and pod reactions of 18 tepary bean ( Phaseolus acutifolius ) accessions and one susceptible dry bean check, ‘Spinel’ ( P. vulgaris ), to five common blight ( Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli ) strains of diverse origin were determined in greenhouse tests. Tepary accessions showed incompatible reaction, slight symptoms, or moderate to severe symptoms on the leaves and pods. Statistical interactions of bacterial strains × host compatibility for both leaves and pods were evident. There were intermediate to moderately high positive correlations between the reaction of leaves and pods for four strains and a low correlation with one strain. Selection for resistance should be done in both pods and leaves.
