Use of digital tools in adult information literacy programmes in Nigeria: A case study of Nsukka urban

Abstract

The evolution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and its application in adult information literacy programmes is essential in changing the methods of teaching, instruction and learning in literacy centres in the Nsukka urban area in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State, Nigeria (henceforth, Nsukka Urban). It has been observed that most literacy centres in Nsukka Urban are still using the traditional mode of instruction and have not adopted fully the use of digital tools in information literacy programmes. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of digital tools in adult literacy programmes in Nsukka Urban. The study used a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was made up of 355 participants, comprising 340 adult information literacy learners and 15 teachers from two information literacy centres in Nsukka Urban. A sample size of 355 was used for the study. A questionnaire and an observation checklist were the instruments used for data collection. The questionnaire was distributed and collected back after completion personally by the researchers and their assistants. The data was analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22. The findings of the study showed that digital tools are very vital in facilitating teaching and learning in an adult information literacy programme. It was observed that challenges such as lack of funding, internet network, etc. affect the use of digital tools in adult information literacy programmes in Nsukka Urban.
