The sediments recovered provide excellent Neogene siliceous reference sections for the NW Pacific from an open ocean environment (Site 436) to an upper slope environment (Site 438). The location of the transect near the confluence of the cold-water Oyashiro Current and the warm-water Kuroshiro Current results in a mixture of high- and low-latitude zonations that are used in the N Pacific. Diatoms and radiolarians are the most abundant, continuously present microfossils and provide the best stratigraphic control. -from Authors
