Simple girdle kills small American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.)

Abstract

A simple girdle at waist height will kill small understory American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.). Either removing all the bark from within the girdle or cutting two rings into the wood around the circumference using a small saw will suffice. These methods would likely work on other hardwoods as well.
