El Paleolítico inferior en Cataluña

Abstract

El conocimiento del Paleolítico inferior de Cataluña todavía está condicionado por la escasez de yacimientos con fauna e industria lítica en contexto estratigráfico. Sin embargo, la intensificación de las investigaciones durante los últimos años permite dibujar un panorama cada vez más nítido de este periodo. Las ocupaciones más antiguas podrían situarse a finales del Pleistoceno inferior e inicio del Pleistoceno medio, con una tecnología lítica de Modo 1. El Modo 2 aparece en numerosos yacimientos, entre los que destacan los situados en la comarca de La Selva (Girona). Este Modo técnico no siempre va acompañado de los morfotipos más característicos del Achelense. El paso del Modo 2 al Modo 3 fue gradual, y tuvo lugar al final del Pleistoceno medio.The knowledge of the Lower Palaeolithic of Catalonia is still conditioned for the scarcity of sites with fauna and lithic industry in stratigraphic context. However, the intensification of the research over the past years allows us drawing a clearer panorama of this period. The most ancient occupations would be able to date from the end of the Lower Pleistocene and the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene, with Mode 1 lithic technology. Mode 2 appears in numerous sites, standing out the sites located in La Selva (Girona). This technical Mode not always is associated to the most characteristic Acheulean artefacts. The transition from Mode 2 to Mode 3 was gradual, and took place at the end of the Middle Pleistocene.
