Abstract

Isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol is a liquid, colorless substance, with molecular formula C3H8O, molecular mass 60,10 g mol-1, soluble in water, many other alcohols and organic solvents. Isopropanol global market consists in a production of almost 3 million tons per year, having its production and consumption focused on USA and Asia. Its industrial production goes back to the 1940's, when the first synthesis methodology was created, and an alternative route being presented only in 1951. Nowadays, production counts with efficient methods, obtaining up to 90% yield, due to all synthetic routes, patented or not, or using biosynthesis.
