Abstract
Retrospective study in order to evaluate 43 equine patients with incarcerated inguinal hernia (HII) hospitalised at the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Brno, Czech republic since October 1, 1994 until August 31, 2002 was performed. Apparently great incidence was in black Kladrubien breed horses. Out of 43 cases of HII represented by 38 horses (five horses were hospitalised twice), in 6 cases was not HII in time of aproach to the clinic confirmed, 4 stallions were destroyed because of seriously alternated general status and 34 patients were operated. First attempt of reposition of the intestine was made through ventral midline celiotomy (15 cases) or inguinal approach (19 horses). In 9 horses from the first group and 11 horses from the second one the chosen approach was found for the definitive solution as insufficient and these cases needed both operation methods at the same time for successful treatment. After the exploration of abdominal cavity three operated horses were destroyed for inoperable siluation, in 16 patients the only reposition and decompression was performed, 15 stallions were treated by intestinal resection. Five horses did not survive the postoperative period. Out of 26 horses released from the clinic 25 returned to the original exploratation and did not show any recurrent colic episodes later.
