Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is currently considered one of the most prevalent diseases in the western world and is a true epidemics in urbanized societies. Its importance is related not only to its increasing incidence, but also to its intrinsic relationship with atherosclerotic disease with a major impact on morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. The most important manifestation of the macrovascular involvement produced by diabetes is coronary artery disease due to the early and accelerated atherosclerosis process, which increases morbidity and mortality in these patients. The objective of this review is to analyze coronary artery disease in diabetic patients, approaching the different aspects involved in the association of these two pathologies: epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical and angiographic characteristics and their management in relation to drug therapy and percutaneous and surgical revascularization procedures.
