Abstract

Introduction: The sedentary lifestyle aligns with health adversities. If it remains in adolescence, the chance to continue into adulthood is higher. Sedentary lifestyle aligns with health adversities and, if retained in adolescence, the chance of remaining in adulthood is greater. However, few studies report the chronological age in which sedentary behavior manifests itself with greater incidence. Objective: Compare the uptime of sedentary activity in adolescents at different ages. Patients and Methods: The study included 72 subjects with a mean age of 12.75 ± 1.69 years, 45 boys (62.5%), and 27 girls (37.5%). Later, they were grouped into three age groups: 9-11, 12-14, and 15-17 years. The volunteers answered the questionnaire Physical Activity Checklist Interview, which was used to identify the uptime of sedentary activity the day before. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to analyze data distribution. Student’s t-test was used to compare independent samples between the sexes, and the Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc test was used to analyze the variance between age groups. All tests assumed α = 0.05. Results: There was a difference in the uptime of sedentary activity between the ages of 9 and 11 years (92.86±84.67 minutes/day) and from 12 and 14 years (200.92±151.75 minutes/day). There were no differences regarding the age group of 15 to 17 years (130.38±129.75 minutes/day). Conclusion: It should be noted that the highest uptime of sedentary activity occurred in the age group of 12 to 14 years. Thus, it is understood that interventions related to the prevention of sedentary lifestyle in adolescence may be more effec-tive in this age group.
