Abstract

Aira-Tn Ash, one of the widespread tephra of late Quatenary in and around Japan, has played an important role as a prominent time marker. Several ages have been given for its eruption obtained mainly by the 14C method. In this paper, we dated the eruption age of Aira-Tn Ash (AT) from a deep sea core using accelerator mass spectrometry. The eruption age of AT Ash was re-examined in detail by AMS 14C dating method using mono-specific planktonic foraminiferal tests (Neogloboquadorina dutertrei) on five levels in the core and was estimated to be 24 330 ± 225 yr.
