Abstract

This chapter is adapted with permission from Links PS, Gould G, Ratnayake R: 'Assessing Suicidal Youth With Antisocial, Borderline, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder.' Canadian Journal of Psychiatry 48:301-310, 2003. The purpose of this chapter is threefold. First, the epidemiological evidence for the association between suicidal behavior and suicide in individuals diagnosed with personality disorders is reviewed. Second, we examine whether any potentially modifiable risk factors are associated with these diagnoses, based on existing empirical evidence. Last, clinical approaches to the assessment of the uncommunicative patient and patients with antisocial, borderline, and narcissistic personality disorders presenting at risk for suicide are discussed.
