Abstract
A conference paper about educational reformer John Dewey and the recent work in the philosophy and practice of education is presented. It focuses on higher education, where Dewey's writings have had the least impact. It is argued that Dewey's work contains the necessary resources for meeting two challenges in contemporary society, namely the trend in higher education from an elite to a mass institution, and the movement toward increasingly individualized scenes of instruction.
