Abstract

We report on observations of cusp-like sharply peaked dust acoustic solitons in a one-dimensional fluid simulation of a dusty plasma system. These nonlinear singular structures, dithering at the wave breaking point, are found to be long-lived entities that emerge spontaneously from a variety of largeamplitude initial perturbations. Such excitations can play a significant role in wave breaking and wave-particle dynamics in dusty plasmas and may explain some recent experimental observations. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.
