Abstract

Energy balance calculations are required for the design and thermal management of battery systems. A proper cell energy balance will give reliable predictions of thermal characteristics such as heat generation and temperature-time profiles. The authors present a general energy balance equation for battery systems. This equation includes energy contributions from mixing, phase changes, and simultaneous electrochemical reactions with composition dependent open-circuit potentials.
