Abstract

A method is described for preparation of samples of bovine feces for analysis of ytterbium and cobalt ethylenediaminetetraacetate complex. Two hundred milligrams of feces was placed into a 50-ml screwcap polypropylene centrifuge tube. Twenty milliliters of .05 M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid solution in .05% potassium chloride with pH adjusted to 6.5 with ammonium hydroxide was added to feces in the centrifuge tube. Tubes were capped and shaken for 30 min on a wrist action shaker, filtered, and analyzed by atomic emission and atomic absorption. Ytterbium and cobalt ethylenediaminetetraacetate complex were extracted quantitatively by the procedures with little interference from the fecal sample. The procedure is rapid and yields reliable data. © 1984, American Dairy Science Association. All rights reserved.
