Abstract

This article covers the main areas of respiratory physiology that are important to anaesthetists. Examples relevant to anaesthesia and pathological states are used when possible. Further detail is included in the following articles on oxygen delivery and carbon dioxide transport. Some areas are covered in more than one article, but are included since alternative explanations from different authors may enhance understanding of more difficult aspects of this subject.
