Abstract
ocial media and digital platforms have become pervasive forces, profoundly reshaping how legal issues are discussed, understood, and perceived by the public. This paper argues that these platforms are not mere conduits for information but active agents in transforming legal discourse and public legal consciousness. Drawing on an interdisciplinary meta-synthesis of recent literature (2020-2025), this research explores the multifaceted impacts of digital technologies on the legal sphere. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of academic studies, expert reports, and legal documents, interpreted through theoretical lenses including framing theory, agenda-setting, echo chamber effects, critical discourse studies, and social network analysis. Key findings reveal that social media significantly distorts public understanding of crime and justice, contributes to „trial by social media” thereby eroding jury impartiality, and challenges the professional norms and independence of legal actors. The paper further examines the role of algorithmic governance, the spread of legal misinformation, platform-specific dynamics (Twitter/X, Facebook, TikTok, Reddit), and the expanding footprint of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal contexts. The discussion synthesizes these impacts, highlighting the shifting locus of legal authority, the constitutional and regulatory dilemmas posed by platform power, and identifies novel phenomena such as the „paradox of visibility,” the „co-evolution” of law and digital platforms, and the „weaponization of legal discourse.” The paper concludes by underscoring critical research gaps and emphasizing the imperative for adaptive regulatory frameworks and enhanced digital legal literacy to foster digital legal integrity in an increasingly hyper-connected world.
