Madrid Río: a green gentrification channel

Abstract

Cities are creating new green infrastructure as part of a sustainability agenda in an era of accelerating climate change and a post-industrial economy. However, the revaluation of land as a result of new parks can have the effect of displacing part of the neighbors. The concept of green gentrification is used to study this phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether a green infrastructure with all the conditions for the generation of such dynamics (Madrid Río) can do so despite being located at the main socio-spatial border of one of the most segregated cities in Europe (Madrid). Through the use of multivariate analysis techniques and information with a high degree of territorial and social detail, it is concluded that Madrid Río has been a catalyst for the gentrification of the census tracts closest to its previously impoverished edge.
