Abstract

The main theories of International Relations: an assessment of the progress of the discipline This article takes stock of the theoretical progress of the discipline of International Relations (ir). It identifies six main theories in ir, presenting a synthesis of its main assumptions and theoretical advances. Finally, it develops a discussion about the importance of theory in the present post‑paradigmatic moment of the ir discipline. The article defends two key arguments. First, while ir discipline is experiencing a moment of theoretical maturity characterized by the abandonment of major debates and the quest for paradigmatic primacy, it is not the end of theory. Second, despite the emergence of a theoretical spring, it is necessary for ir discipline, and its theories, to have more connection, relevance, and impact on diplomatic practice and hegemónico na disciplina, political decision making.
