Abstract
This article describes the existence and the dynamics of Mandar traditional music performance. This study uses qualitative methods and is analyzed by interactive models. Data collection techniques are through observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants selected purposively include: legendary artists, young artists, community leaders observing traditional music and the government who handling the field of culture. The results show that until now the Mandar traditional music performance still survives amid the progress of modern music. This happens because Mandar artists always explore their traditional music performance in various festival events continuously. The Mandar people have been familiar with traditional music along with the birth of Mandar farmers. Mandar traditional musical instruments still exist until now and are always performed at various traditional music festivals, such as: calong, gantung lima, keke, ganrang, and Mandar harp. The dynamics model of Mandar traditional music performance is developing in accordance with the concept of the recent musical performance. The form and model are one type of musical instrument performance (ansamble), collaborative performance with other Mandar traditional music instruments or modern ones, and traditional music performance as dance accompaniment (tu’duq). As an appreciation, Mandar traditional music performance won at the local, national and international performance events. Nowadays, young Mandar artists rise up by exploring their traditional music games through social media in the form of YouTube videos.
