Abstract

65 species of chironomids have been recorded from Morocco according to an analysis of data from the literature between 1955 and 1986. More recent collections from various rivers going through the towns of Fes, Meknes, Khenifra, Marrakech, have now increased to 134 the number of chironomid species recorded from Moroccan territory. They are distributed thus: 16 Tanypodinae, 8 Diamesinae, 42 Orthocladiinae, 45 Chironomini, 23 Tanytarsini. 11 species (8,2 %) are of Ethiopian origin and 6 species are indigenous to North Africa: Rheopelopia n. sp., Telopelopia maroccana, Rheomus alatus, Rheomus yahiae, Stempellina almi, Virgatanytarsus ansatus. © Masson, 1987.
