Abstract

Electro-oxidation of methanol on NiO-promoted Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts in alkaline media was studied. Such electrocatalysts are superior to pure Pt or Pd electrocatalysts. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the addition of NiO into Pt/C or Pd/C catalysts could significantly improve electrode performance for methanol oxidation in terms of reaction activity and poisoning resistance. The influence of the amount of NiO in the catalysts on electrode performance for methanol oxidation was tested. The electrode with a weight ratio of Pt or Pd to NiO of 4:1 showed the highest electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation. © 2005 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
