Abstract

Ohio OX38 is a main-season processing Lycopersicon esculentum hybrid adapted for machine harvest and bulk handling, and suited for the production of peeled, coreless, whole-canned tomatoes as well as juice and puréed products. Ohio OX38 is an F1 hybrid from the cross O88119 and Ohio 8245. Fruits of Ohio OX38 average 54 g in weight, are ovate-plum-shaped, smooth with a small stem scar and core, and are uniform in ripening. Fruits readily response to ethephon application to hasten ripening. Ohio OX38 has suitable soluble solids concentrations, titratable acidity, colour and ascorbic acid contents. Yields of Ohio OX38 were compared over 1992 and 1993 were high (70.3 and 80.4 t/ha, respectively) compared with other cultivars evaluated. Ohio OX38 is resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici and Verticillium dahliae, and is tolerant of Alternaria solani and fruit rots (Colletotrichum spp.). Resistance to radial and concentric fruit cracking and the ability to store mature fruit on the vine for extended periods before harvest make possible high yields in once-over machine harvest.
