Abstract

This paper describes the background of Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) and reviews original EMTP development at Bonneville Power Administration of the US Department of Energy starting from 1966 to 1984. Then, the paper briefly explains the development and present situation of four EMTPs, that is, ATP-EMTP, EMTP-RV (now EMTP®), EMTDC/PSCAD and XTAP. In addition, the line/cable parameters and the modeling methods prepared in EMTPs are described, and related problems are explained. Finally, the recent trend and future of electromagnetic transient simulations are discussed. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Published by Wiley Periodicals LLC.
