Taxonomic studies on the Piperaceae in Brazil revealed a new species for the family, based on material from Espirito Santo state. Peperomia ciliatocaespitosa is a plant that occurs in "campos rupestres" with a cespitose habit and characteristic fruits, belonging to the subgenus Rhynchophorum (Miq.) Dahlst. The new taxon is described, illustrated and compared to related species.
