Abstract
Abstract: Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays a central role in shaping students' character, especially in Islamic-based schools such as SMA Darul Ulum 2 Unggulan BPPT Jombang. This study aims to examine the challenges faced in learning PAI as well as its influence on the character building of students. The approach used is descriptive-qualitative with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and document analysis. The research findings show that the main challenges in PAI learning include the diversity of students' backgrounds, the influence of global culture, and obstacles in the implementation of worship practices. Nevertheless, various efforts were made to overcome them, such as adjusting teaching methods, strengthening moral values, as well as coaching and motivating students. In addition, the results of the study revealed that PAI made a major contribution to student character building. The positive impacts include increased discipline, more developed social awareness, as well as the growth of honesty and a sense of responsibility. Students who previously lacked understanding of the meaning of worship showed a change in mindset and behavior after attending religious learning intensively and getting examples from teachers. The school atmosphere that is thick with Islamic nuances also strengthens character building through religious activities that are carried out regularly. Overall, this study concludes that although PAI learning faces various challenges, its influence on student character building is enormous. With flexible learning methods, exemplary behavior from teachers, and the support of a religious school environment, religious education is able to become the main pillar in producing a young generation that is noble and ready to face the times.
