At the recently-held CAD Expo Plus, half a dozen companies displayed digital printing machines or technology. Although digital printing has many advantages, such as reduction of fabric waste, elimination of the need to produce screens, environmentally-friendliness and flexibility of design, it also has disadvantages: The process is far too slow for long production runs, with average speeds of about 15 feet per hour, far below roller screen printing. It is also currently move expensive than traditional methods. This article investigates the technology currently available in digital printing, and assesses future possible improvements.
