Abstract

This paper explores the development and execution of the Smart Site Safety System (4S) from the viewpoints of various parties in the construction sector. It seeks to shed light on the voluntary uptake of the 4S as a safety benchmark on construction sites by examining the perspectives of developers and contractors, assessing the implementation processes, pinpointing possible challenges, and suggesting relevant training initiatives. Preliminary work was carried out at two current construction sites linked to selected innovation and technology firms. This strategy presented numerous benefits, such as comprehensive testing, utilizing established business relationships, and minimizing initial development expenses. The first interview occurred during the installation phase of the project, with a follow-up interview conducted nine months later. This deliberate method aids in reducing risks, addressing related requirements, and overcoming implementation challenges. Additionally, the companies that contributed to the study are committed to ongoing research endeavors, incorporating training sessions designed to leverage worker know-how and ensure effective role alignment in the 4S structure. This forward-thinking approach responds to the industry’s pressing demand for capacity-building and skill enhancement, aiding in the seamless transition to a safer and more sustainable workplace.
