Abstract

This is a study aimed at characterizing the socioeconomics of fishermen of sururu (Mytella falcata) in the Mundaú lagoon and at understanding their perceptions about health. To this end, 39 fishermen were interviewed, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Of these fishermen, most were men with little formal education and an income level up to minimum wage. Almost 50% live in improvised houses without basic sanitation (61.54 %) and over 67% have already lost their jobs due to illness or accidents. It appears that sururu fishing implies certain health hazards and other risk factors, which are amplified by human activity in the environment of the lagoon as well as by the inefficiency of the State to act more efficiently in organizing the urban space and implementing basic sanitation.
