Os ‘estudos da tradução’ como área de pesquisa independente: dilemas e ilusões de uma disciplina em (des)construção

Abstract

A partir da década de 1960, a reflexão sobre tradução começou a conquistar espaços mais definidos dentro das instituições e publicações acadêmicas. Desde então, as tentativas explícitas de ampliar e consolidar esses espaços, de caráter basicamente essencialista, têm declarado seu interesse em tornar essa reflexão o mais racional e sistemática possível, o que não apenas a legitimaria enquanto área de pesquisa, mas também como instrumento legislador de toda a prática de tradução, quaisquer que sejam as línguas, os objetivos e as circunstâncias envolvidas. O presente trabalho se propõe apresentar um perfil crítico das principais tentativas de ocupação dos territórios acadêmicos reivindicados em nome dos "estudos da tradução", mostrando que o que as têm motivado, sobretudo, é um certo impulso imperialista em que o que está realmente em jogo é o prestígio e o poder das tendências em nome das quais se pretende disciplinar a tarefa do tradutor.Since the early 1960’s, the study of translation has begun to conquer a more defined space within academic institutions and publications. Since then, all the basically essentialist attempts at widening and consolidating such a space have declared their interest in making that study as rational and as systematic as possible, so that it would be recognized as a legitimate research area which should also legislate over all translation practices, no matter which languages, goals or circumstances were involved. This paper intends to present a critical account of the main attempts at occupying the academic terrain claimed by "translation studies," arguing that what has motivated them, above all, is a certain imperialistic thrust in which what is actually at stake is the prestige and the power of the trends in the name of which they intend to discipline the translator’s task.
