Abstract

Crook et al. (1990) conduct a series of numerical experiments of stratified flow past an axisymmetric three-dimensional obstacle wherein the Froude number is changed gradually over time through the agency of an externally imposed pressure gradient. We use the aforementioned numerical experiments and analysis to explore further this connection. Our experiments suggest that, although lee vortices and wave breaking can occur in the same range of Froude number, they are basically separate physical entities. It is concluded that a theory of lee-vortex formation is not yet at hand. -from Authors
