Crime & punishment: Prisons and confinament during the late colonial period. The royal prison of arequipa, 1780-1824

Abstract

The present study analyses reclusion spaces and mechanisms in the former Intendan-cy of Arequipa, towards the end of the colonial period. Exhaustive detail on organisation, maintenance, infrastructure, security, economy, and salubriousness, concerning various confine-ment centres will be provided. This paper stud-ies the meaning of the jail in the Ancient Re-gime, taking in consideration the peripheric experience of an arequipenian jail.
