Systems of curves on surfaces

Abstract

It is proved that for each compact (bordered) surface Σ and each integer k there is a constant N with the following property: If Γ is a family of pairwise non-homotopic closed curves on Σ such that any two curves from Γ intersect in at most k points, then Γ contains at most N curves. © 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
